“I am glad I get to see the different dynamics at work…consistency of leadership, when you have so many teams, is how it works.”
What was your first day like as a Unit Leader?
I found out way before my start date. I was working at Headquarters and my friend was a Raven Unit leader and she sent me all of the information. It was emails, paper; you name it I got it. I don’t remember the day I was officially named Unit Leader; I had started the process of learning prior to that date.
How did you decide on the creation of teams?
You have to use many layers: Personality, preferences, diverse backgrounds, and FQS’s to name a few. I tried to give everyone something from their top 3 choices. I also wanted the teams to learn and grow from each other; I wanted it to be diverse in the sense of: education, ethnicity, and mentality. I also wanted to make sure the team would work well with the team leader. Creating teams had to be the most nerve racking thing I have ever had to do.
What is the most important thing that society needs?
I think the most important thing is education. Everyone should have access to it, access to college and alternative forms of education. I love the idea that certain universities are offering free classes online, not for credit, but for furthering your education outside the classroom.
As long as we have been in this program, we as a corps have noticed a certain fashion trend. Can you explain your love of striped sweaters?
I shop at Old Navy and Target. I guess I started collecting them and I didn’t notice until a corps member pointed it out. It was just something I acquired; maybe it is just the fashion scene that Old Navy is in right now.
What is the best part of being a Unit Leader?
You learn something new every day. I like a job where I learn something new every day. That is a challenge. Being a team leader has its highs and lows. Some days you get hurt, you feel like you messed up, but others you see your corps members succeed and it’s a high. There are multiple highs multiple lows. It is all part of the job.
What is your dream job with FEMA?
That would have to be a FEMA Corps Liaison, they have the biggest influence on the teams, the POC’s and they get to see how amazing the teams are in action. I would also be able to give insight on how the teams could be used. I want to see the FEMA Corps teams utilized, I want this programme to grow.
What is your dream job with NCCC?
Being a unite leader is my dream job, but if I had to choose I would go back to Headquarters. I would be able to bring back the experience of the position I currently hold and help at the policy level. I would really miss the people aspect of my job, but I want to improve FEMA Corps and the communication to and from Headquarters.
